It’s been five years since Etihad Airways, which was named the World’s Leading Airline at the 2011 World Travel Awards, launched flights between Milan and Abu Dhabi and, to celebrate, we’ve pulled together our top five favourite things to do in the Emirates city.
1) Ferrari World
If you’re a fan of motorsport and fast cars in particular, then gear up for the world’s biggest undercover theme park on the fantastic Yas Island complex in Abu Dhabi. The theme park is covered by a 250,000m Ferrari Red roof – themed like a Ferrari GT car body shell. Attractions include Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster; G Force, a thrilling 62m high tower ride, and V12, a flume ride to the centre of a 12-cylinder engine. This theme park is definitely one for the boys.
2) Freediving
Plunge to the deepest depths of the ocean where you can swim limitlessly among the marine life on a Freedive course with trained instructors. Embark on the underwater experience of a lifetime – which is not only liberating, but a truly calming experience. It’s an up-and-coming water sport with more and more diving instructors jumping on the bandwagon. It means holding your breath, however, so not really for the faint-hearted.
3) Emirates Palace
Although a huge conference centre and hotel, the Emirates Palace is well worth a visit to see its opulent, landscaped gardens and lawns with fountains and palms. The public areas are open daily to non-residents and admission is free. One of the best things to do here is to enjoy afternoon tea and cakes in the lobby café although arts exhibitions regularly. A word of warning beforehand, though, be sure to observe the dress code and have a valid reason for your visit. Booking for the restaurant and café is recommended.
4) Falcon Hospital
Although a bit of a trek from the centre of Abu Dhabi, Falcon Hospital is worth making the trip for. It’s an excursion which can normally be booked via your Abu Dhabi hotel reception and reveals the unique connection between Emirates people and these majestic birds of prey. It’s a great chance to get up close and personal with serious raptors behind the scenes in a large bird hospital, where you can handle the falcons and watch minor procedures like claw clipping. Prepare to be surprised and amazed!
5) Heritage Village
To find out more about Bedouin culture, make for Heritage Village – a living exhibition of Arab lifestyle and traditions. It’s a great way to understand Emirati heritage and there’s even a bit of desert to give you a feel for what it’s like to live, travel and work in such heat and conditions. It’s a place you’ll either love or loathe but whatever your opinion, you’ll enjoy the gorgeous Abu Dhabi skyline and views of the sea.
