Off the beaten track: Our top 10 European ski destinations

Try something a little different this ski season and make for one of our more obscure winter destinations:

1) Pamporovo, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria
It may be popular with the Bulgarian elite – and particularly in Plovdiv – but Pamporovo is still relatively unknown among global alpine tourists.

2) Les Fourgs, Franche-Comté, France
Les Fourges has that certain je ne sais quois yet is still largely undiscovered by the European skiing populis. A comforting sense of calm on the Jura slopes is what it’s all about.

3) Brezovica, Šar Mountains, Kosovo
Forget the Kosovan war; there’s no danger here – just brilliantly serene slopes and the amazing alpine village of Brezovica.

4) Vergio, Corsica
Situated in north Corsica, Vergio was the first ski resort on the island and is still relatively unknown.

5) Seli, Vermion Mountains, Greece
Despite Greece’s many other ski resorts, Seli was the very first – not far from Thessaloniki.

6) Hlíðarfjall, Akureyri, Iceland
Hlíðarfjall is one of only two major winter resorts in Iceland and is pretty close to the picturesque port town of Akureyri.

7) Gudauri, Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, Georgia
Set for Winter Olympics credibility in 2014, the Caucasus Mountains make for some dramatic scenery and are indeed a UNESCO World Heritage site.

8) Rifiugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana, Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy
If you’re intrepid enough to ski a legendary volcano, then this is the place!

9) Bukowina Tatrzanska, Tatra County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland
Find Bukowina Tatrzanska on the border of Slovakia, about 100 km from Krakow. It’s small but steeped in Carpathian Mountain beauty.

10) Otepää, Valga County, Estonia
Otepää is the only ski resorts in Estonia and, just 42.5km from the city of Tartu, is also a beautiful hamlet which regularly hosts International Ski Federation events.
